You may not believe this, but it's true.
The people who make the greatest impact aren’t always the most polished.
They’re the most real.
They’re the ones willing to share the story behind what they do.
Not just the outcomes, but the experiences that shaped them.
And right now, more than ever…
Your story matters.
People Don’t Connect to Perfection
They connect to truth.
We live in a world filled with noise: perfectly curated posts, filtered messages, carefully crafted branding.
But what cuts through?
Honesty.
Vulnerability.
Human experience.
Your story is what makes people pause and say:
“I see myself in that.”
🎬 A Lesson I Learned Behind the Camera
Years ago, I was part of a team producing a patient safety film called “Things You Should Know Before Entering The Hospital.”
We went out into the streets to interview everyday people. We even brought in actor Ben Hollis to ask a simple question:
👉 “What do you think people need to know before entering the hospital?”
The answers were thoughtful, diverse, and insightful. Everything seemed to be coming together…
Until I realized something we had completely missed.
We hadn’t included anyone with disabilities. That moment stopped me.
Because how could we create something meaningful about patient safety,
without including the voices of people who experience healthcare in a completely different way?
So we went back.
We continued filming.
And we made sure those voices were included.
The film went on to win a national Telly Award. But the real lesson stayed with me:
The stories we include — and the ones we leave out matter.
When You Don't Share Your Story You Stay Hidden
You can list your accomplishments.
You can share your expertise.
But what people really want to know is:
- Why do you care?
- What have you lived through?
- What do you understand—because you’ve experienced it?
Your story answers those questions in a way nothing else can.
And yet… so many meaningful leaders hold back.
They think:
- “My story isn’t important enough.”
- “I don’t want to make it about me.”
- “I’ll share later… when everything is more polished.”
But when you don’t share your story,
you’re not staying humble…
You’re staying hidden.
And the people who need to hear your message?
They may never find you.
Your Story is the Bridge
Your story isn’t about you.
It’s about the connection it creates.
The hope it offers.
The possibility it opens up for someone else.
When you share your story, you give others:
- Permission to reflect
- Courage to step forward
- A sense that they’re not alone
That’s where real impact begins.
A Simple Invitation
You don’t need to share everything.
You don’t need to have it perfectly written.
You just need to begin.
Start with one moment.
One experience.
One lesson that shaped who you are today.
Because your story — when shared with intention,
has the power to open doors you never expected.
What’s one life experience that shaped who you are today…
that you don’t share often enough?
